Participation: This special project of Mesa County RSVP places senior citizen volunteers public and private K-12 schools of Mesa County. These caring older adults tutor kids in reading, writing and mathematics in the schools under the direction of teachers.

Tutoring:Currently 150 senior volunteers are listed in our project, 75 of them providing regular tutoring in classrooms in 33 schools. We provide training, using some America Reads materials.

Resources: Staff coordinates volunteers and contracts with trainers to provide the training sessions. Tutors help students in classrooms under the direction of teachers.

Research: Teachers and volunteers evaluate the program yearly.

Relations:We activly promote our literacy program in local media. We work with Foster grandparents and First Books and local service clubs.

Participation: We are the RSVP agency for Garfield County with population of about 38,000 covering almost 3000 square miles. We are partnering with the 6 elementary schools. We provide one on one tutoring in grades k-3. RSVP recruits volunteers to serve in many critical community capabilities - America Reads is one program.

Tutoring: About 75 volunteers. Population K-3. Seniors volunteering. 6 elementary schools in 3 districts. Training programs are available to anyone interested.

Resources: We have training materials. Staff coordinates volunteer efforts. We participate in funding and participate in fundraising to support literacy. Children meet with tutors in the schools.

Research: Teachers evaluate each child at the beginning and the end of each year. We evaluate our program based on the progress of the children.

Relations: We have an ongoing PR campaign to keep the word out.
