8-9 Algebraic Thinking - Games

  • Match linear graphs (ENC-012255) This set of five decks of cards with teacher's manual is a learning and assessment tool that aims to provide students in middle school and above with a visual association for algebraic expressions and a structure for learning the components of linear functions in both the equation and graphic forms. In this set, each 60-card deck is made up of cards which feature important components of linear equations categorized into the following: graphs of lines, equations of lines, a chart with five coordinate pairs that form a line, slope values, or y-intercept values. Teachers can use these flash cards in lessons or suggested games.

  • Match quadratic equations (ENC-012251) This set of five decks of cards with teacher's manual is a learning and assessment tool that aims to provide algebra students with a visual association for quadratic equations and a structure for learning the components of quadratic functions in both the equation and graphic forms. In this set, each 60-card deck is made up of cards which feature important components of quadratic equations categorized into the following: graphs of quadratic functions, equations, charts of five coordinate pairs, factors, and roots. Teachers can use these flash cards in lessons or suggested games.

  • Nasco pre-algebra bingo (ENC-007436) This educational game, based on the game bingo, is intended as a review over operations such as whole integers, fractions, decimals and percents; solving linear equations; and evaluating open expressions. Students match what is on their cards with what the caller reads from a deck. Cards contain either a numerical expression to be simplified, an algebraic expression to be evaluated with given values, a linear equation to be solved, or a percent problem to be solved and reads the expression, equation, or problem. When a player has an answer that matches, they cover a space; when they fill a row or column, they call out and the answers are checked against the deck.

  • Opps : the pre-algebra game of opposites (ENC-012244) In this dice and board game for two to four players, students use addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of positive and negative numbers to arrive at totals from negative 18 to positive 18. offers students the opportunity to work with positive and negative numbers. Play continues until all spaces are filled or no move is possible on three consecutive turns for each player.
