6 - 7 Number Sense - Activities

  • About teaching mathematics: K-8 (ENC-008504) The goal of this book is to help educators implement mathematics instruction that develops students who feel mathematically secure, use numbers confidently to come to decisions, understand mathematical principles, and can apply their understanding to problem solving situations. The three parts of the book address basic math education topics, 200 classroom problem solving activities, and the changing nature of mathematics instruction.

  • Amazing facts and real problems (ENC-001290) These sets of cards are a collection of reading and mathematics experiences that challenge students to use mathematics to solve real life problems. Topics come from the physical and natural sciences; history, government, and geography; architecture; the fine arts; entertainment; and sports. There is a paragraph of information about each topic which is then followed by a challenge problem. To solve the problem, students must obtain data from the paragraph and decide upon a solution strategy.

  • Family math (ENC-000589) This book contains activities from the Family Math program; the program focuses on parents and children learning mathematics together. Activities involve experimenting, discovering, mathematical reasoning, and problem solving. Many activities develop understanding with hands-on materials. Topics include arithmetic, geometry, probability, statistics, measurement, logic, estimation, calculators, computers, careers, and recognition of patterns and relationships. The book contains ideas for creating an environment that makes mathematics seem attractive and interesting for children and includes ideas for parents to consider as they do mathematics at home.

  • Family math: The middle school years. Algebraic reasoning and number sense. (ENC-014148) This resource book, written for parents of students in grades 5 to 8 and useful for their teachers, is filled with fun, instructive, and nonthreatening math activities for families or small class groups to enjoy together. Most activities involve several integrated math concepts rather than isolated skills and aim to promote better student understanding and mathematics achievement. Algebraic thinking and the development of number sense are the focus of this book designed to help prepare students for advanced high school mathematics. The mathematics behind each activity is explained in notes to the reader.

  • Ideas: NCTM standards-based instruction-grades 5 -8 (ENC-007842) This National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) book is meant for use as a resource for mathematics teachers in grades 5 through 8. The book consists of a collection of lessons from 1991 to 1994 issues of the journal ARITHMETIC TEACHER: MATHEMATICS EDUCATION THROUGH THE MIDDLE GRADES. Each activity sheet has been edited from its journal form for clarity and brevity.

  • The Landmark method for teaching arithmetic (ENC-017340) This resource book provides strategies for teaching multiplication, division, word problems, and math facts. It is designed for public and private school teachers who work with students with language based learning disabilities. Materials in this book include a description of the principles of good teaching and a detailed discussion of the role of readiness skills. Also found are specific directions for the order and methods that are useful in teaching multiplication facts and suggestions for linking mathematics to the real world of students with word problems.

  • Logic number problems (ENC-011375) This book is a collection of fifty number puzzles designed to provide experiences in problem solving and thinking skills for students in grades 7 through 12. Each puzzle consists of a sequence of ten clues about an unknown number. Students use deductive reasoning to discover the answer using the fewest clues possible. Primary emphasis is on problem-solving strategies and thinking skills.

  • Number SENSE : Simple Effective Number Sense Experiences. Grades 4-6. (ENC-016334) This resource book for teachers, part of the NUMBER SENSE series, contains 48 experiences, each broken into several five to fifteen minute activities, that aim to help students in grades 4 to 6 develop number sense. The four book series is designed to promote thinking and reflection about numbers with primary through middle school students. Each volume is divided into six sections that explore the major components of number sense: estimation, measurement, and mental computation along with multiple representation, number relationships, and relative size.

  • Number SENSE : Simple Effective Number Sense Experiences. Grades 6-8. (ENC-016338) This resource book for teachers, part of the NUMBER SENSE series, contains 40 experiences, each broken into several five to fifteen minute activities, that aim to help students in grades 6 to 8 develop number sense. The four book series is designed to promote thinking and reflection about numbers with primary through middle school students. Each volume is divided into six sections that explore the major components of number sense: estimation, measurement, and mental computation along with multiple representation, number relationships, and relative size.

  • Sunshine math-Uranus Grade 6 (ENC-013667) This resource binder, part of the SUNSHINE MATH SUPERSTARS III enrichment program, contains 27 activity sheets for grade 6 mathematics, featuring problems that include probability, budgeting, and percentage. The answer section contains commentary on each problem with suggestions for parallel problems to use to stimulate discussion.

  • Sunshine math-Neptune Grade 7 (ENC-013668) This resource binder, part of the SUNSHINE MATH SUPERSTARS III enrichment program, contains 27activity sheets for grade 7 mathematics, featuring problems that include writing equations; finding area and circumference of circles; and applying mean, median, and mode. The answer section contains commentary on each problem with suggestions for parallel problems to use to stimulate discussion.

  • Super problems (ENC-011447)
     This kit contains a collection of sixteen sets of problems designed to develop problem solving skills in students grades 7 - 9. Each set contains three related problems including a warm-up problem, a main problem (also presented as an illustrated poster), and an extension problem. The problem book contains background ideas for teaching problem solving, followed by the collection of problems, each on a reproducible worksheet with detailed teaching suggestions and solutions on the reverse side. Among the topics investigated are the Fibonacci numbers, binary numbers, and simple equations.
