New Book Examines Academic Collaboration between the U.S. and Europe

A new book released November 2, 2009 by the Institute of International Education (IIE) and Freie Universität Berlin features practical recommendations for developing and delivering collaborative degree programs between U.S. and European universities. The publication, Joint and Double Degree Programs: An Emerging Model for Transatlantic Exchange, features articles and insights from higher education administrators and practitioners on both sides of the Atlantic who are seeking to equip their students with the international experience, perspective and skills to succeed in today's global economy. The new book and a related survey are part of a project sponsored by the European Union-United States Atlantis Program jointly administered and funded by the U.S. Department of Education's Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) and the European Commission's Directorate General for Education and Culture. The project was launched in cooperation with several leading U.S. and European institutions including IIE and the State University of New York in the U.S., and Freie Universität Berlin, the Franco-German University, and the Latvian Rectors' Council in the EU.

EU-U.S. Atlantis Program Featured in Newsweek

Newsweek’s August 12, 2009 edition ran a story entitled "Students Without Borders: New options for those who seek a global education" which prominently featured FIPSE’s EU-U.S. Atlantis Program. Dr. Frank Frankfort of FIPSE and Atlantis project directors and students from Bentley University’s Undergraduate Dual Degree Program in International Management, Clemson University’s Consortium for Small and Medium-Size Enterprises and Entrepreneurship Education, and Virginia Tech’s Dual Degree Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Project are quoted in the story.

FIPSE and the Paul Simon Awards

Two of the four 2009 Paul Simon Awards made by NAFSA: Association of International Educators went to projects that cited their FIPSE funding as instrumental to their development. Through its Senator Paul Simon Award for Comprehensive Internationalization, NAFSA recognizes institutions for overall excellence in internationalization efforts as evidenced in practices, structures, philosophies, and policies. Recipients of the Senator Paul Simon Award will be profiled in the 2010 edition of Internationalizing the Campus: Profiles of Success at Colleges and Universities, a NAFSA report on successful models of campus internationalization.

In their submission, the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities cited their 2000 FIPSE Comprehensive grant entitled “Using Study Abroad to Internationalize Professional Degree Programs at the Undergraduate Level" as contributing to their ability to "overcome numerous challenges, maximize strategic new program investments, significantly increase the number of international and study abroad students, and encourage on-campus collaboration, all with the goal of advancing the internationalization of the university."

Portland State University was recognized for “developing new models of international learning for non-traditional students – older, part-time, and predominate place-bound.” They cited support they received as a partner on the American Council on Education’s 2004 FIPSE Comprehensive grant entitled "Lessons Learned in Assessing International Learning."

Videos

Some FIPSE grantees have posted videos of their projects. Some can be located on YouTube; some are on project Web sites. Because these videos were unsolicited and not an official part of any project, they are generally not captioned for the hearing impaired. If someone would like more information about these project videos, they can contact Sarah Beaton at FIPSE.
