Federal Student Loan Programs Data Book FY94-FY96
Table 39. Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) program top 100 current holders of loans as of September 30, 1995 and September 30, 1994
This table lists the top 100 holders (lender name and city) of FFEL program loans for FY94-FY95 ranked by the dollar amount outstanding for FY95.
- Of the thousands of lenders who participated in the FFEL program in FY94-FY95 (6,812 and 5,830, respectively), the top 10 lenders held more than one-half of the outstanding loan dollars (53.8 and 55.8 percent, respectively) (See table A-14 , "Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) program annual number of active lenders, FY66-FY96."). In fact, Sallie Mae, the top holder in both fiscal years, held nearly one-third of all outstanding FFEL program loan dollars. (See table 37 for FFEL program amount outstanding.)
- The top 100 holders held 91.0 percent of all outstanding FFEL program loan dollars in FY95, a 2.5 percentage point increase from FY94 (88.5 percent). Most of this increase may be accounted for by the fact that the top 10 lenders increased their share of the student loan market by 2 percentage points during this period (53.8 to 55.8 percent).
- Between FY94 and FY95, the outstanding dollar amount for Sallie Mae, the top holder for the FFEL program, grew at a faster rate than did the rate for the outstanding FFEL program dollar amount. While the overall FFEL outstanding dollar amount increased by 15.9 percent (from $80.0 to $92.7 billion) during the period, the Sallie Mae outstanding dollar amount increased by 17.5 percent (from $25.9 to $30.5 billion).
