This panel is designed to frame the summit series through the eyes and in the voice of young black men.
7:15pm – My Brother’s Keeper: Community Forum As President Obama stated,“MyBrother’s Keeper” is about helping moreofouryoung people stay on track; providing the support they need tothink more broadlyabout their future; buildingon what works, whenit works, in thosecritical life-changing moments.This community forumis designed tohighlight what worksand what’s needed tosupport boys and men of color in rural and isolated communities.

10:40am Panel I-Leveraging School and Community Partnerships and Public and Private Partnerships to Ensure African American Educational Excellence This panel will highlight the relationship between educational excellence and economic justice to underscore the importance of ensuring that all African Americans develop the skills needed to be successful in the global 21st century economy while simultaneously highlighting the importance of investing in the academic, social and emotional development of African American scholars beginning at birth. Panelists will explain what it means for African American students to graduate from high school, college and career ready. Panelists will discuss popular policies and practices impacting African Americans students, schools and communities (including the Common Core, clarifying the relationship between public charter schools and public non-charter schools and the importance of science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics). Panelists will speak to specific strategies that have demonstrated success in supporting boys and men of color, especially those disconnected from formal systems of education or employment.

  Workshop I – Adult Track—Presenters will facilitate a working lunch workshop for parents, grandparents and other caring adults about the rights and responsibilities of parents and guardians; resources to support meaningful engagement; and promising and proven strategies to support African American educational excellence. Presenters will also highlight resources for adults desiring to further their education and/or to advance workforce preparedness.
  Workshop II – Youth Track—Presenters will facilitate a working lunch workshop for students and scholars equipping young leaders with the information and resources needed to support academic, social and emotional development. Themes highlighted include: personal branding, preparing for the workforce, preparing for college and financial aid processes.
1:00pm AfAmEdTalk Reflections on Pathways to Success
1:20pm -2:30pm Panel II – Empowering Parents, Guardians and Caring Adults to Support Educational Excellence       This panel will equip parents, grandparents, guardians and caring adults with the information and resources needed to support and advocate for African American students in the East Bay. Panelists will provide tips for building meaningful relationships with educators and school leaders.

  School-to-Prison Pipeline
This panel will describe programs, policies and practices that result in safe, supportive and successful environments for boys and men of color. Consistent with the President’s remarks during the launch of the My Brother’s Keeper Initiative, this panel will underscore the need to support boys and men of color with particular emphasis on pipelines sand pathways enhancing the academic and workforce preparedness of African American males.
