The Office of Library Programs left the offices of the Department of Education on August 1, 1997, to relocate at the new Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Created by Public Law 104-208 on September 30, 1996, IMLS consolidates federal support for museums administered by the Institute of Museum Services and federal support for libraries. Beginning in FY 98, funding for libraries will be available under the new Museum and Library Services Act, Subtitle B: Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) of Public Law 104-208. Funding for libraries had been available under the Library Services and Construction Act (LSCA) and the Higher Education Act administered by the Department of Education.
