OERI BULLETIN - Summer 1997
Including Your Child
All children can succeed with the right supports. And when you are raising a child with
special needs, finding the right supports and information can make all the difference in your
child's learning and development. Including Your Child, a new booklet from OERI's
National Institute on Early Childhood Development and Education, may lead families to
people and places that can help. The booklet covers the first eight years of a child's life and
gives information that may answer some questions and guide parents in their search for the
education and services that will best help their children succeed. It includes:
- hints to help in your search to meet your child's special needs;
- a Developmental Progress Chart which gives general milestones in a child's
development between one month and five years of age; and
- an extensive resources section which includes associations and organizations, hotlines,
Internet sites, parent training and information centers, federal agencies, and state
government information.
Single copies of Including Your Child and the accompanying poster, a Developmental
Progress Chart, are available free on a first-come, first-served basis from the National
Library of Education at 1-800-424-1616; fax 202-219-1696. Additional copies of the book
and poster are available from the Government Printing Office (see page 11 for ordering
address) for $10; stock #065-000-00993-5.
Packages of 25 posters are also available for $14; stock #065-000-00994-3. The publication
is available via the Internet at http://www.ed.gov/pubs/parents/Including/.
