Studies of Education ReformThe findings are in! Researchers have reported on their studies of nearly 100 schools and school districts that have successfully implemented a wide range of education reforms. The effort began in 1991, when Congress requested that the Department investigate education reform. OERI contracted with 12 research groups who identified sites and conducted case studies of those sites to understand the nature of the reforms and how the schools initiated and sustained them. Each study focused on one of 12 topical areas: school-based management, student assessment, early childhood education, students at risk, parent and community involvement, student diversity, curriculum reform, school-to-work transition, systemic reform, professional development, education technology, and the uses of time.
OERI is making those findings available, along with a synthesis that outlines eight lessons for educators. Generally, each study comprises three volumes. Volume I contains a discussion of the study findings, case study summaries of the schools or school districts examined, and recommendations. Volume II contains detailed case studies. Volume III is a technical appendix explaining the study's methodology. All are available from the Educational Resources Information Center at 1-800-LET-ERIC. Volume I for most of the studies is also available from the Government Printing Office (see page 11, "How to Order").
