The North Central Regional Educational Laboratory (NCREL), one of 10 Regional Education Laboratories supported by OERI, recently published the first national research magazine about urban schools and communities. A quarterly magazine, Cityschools' goal is to promote the transformation of urban schools by building and strengthening the bridge between research and practice. The magazine brings research to life in actual settings by telling the stories of real educators who are finding solutions to enduring educational problems.
Each issue of Cityschools will focus on a specific topic, featuring the work of researchers, successful practices, and resources for more information. The premiere issue of Cityschools, "Who Are Today's City Kids," looked at positive family and community effects on urban children. The most recent issue, "Saving City Kids," focuses on youth violence and how schools, families, and communities are working together to organize their resources and collectively design strategies to fight this epidemic. Future issues will focus on violence prevention, school restructuring, and urban kids' languages and cultures.
