The Board will provide advice and assistance to the Assistant Secretary in choosing directors for the five research institutes (see The National Institutes at a Glance); advise the United States on the federal educational research and development effort; recommend ways to strengthen active partnerships among researchers, education practitioners, librarians, and policymakers; promote sound and solid interaction and collaboration between program offices and components; and recommend effective ways to put research into practice-appropriate forms of dissemination.

The Board's primary projects include working with the Assistant Secretary to create and implement a research priorities plan; and reviewing and approving standards for the conduct and evaluation of all research, development, and dissemination carried out by OERI.

Members selected Kenji Hakuta and Ted Sanders as cochairs.
