Developing more effective statewide strategies to prepare beginning teachers for the realities of today's and tomorrow's schools is the theme of grants totaling approximately $3.5 million recently awarded by OERI through the Dwight D. Eisenhower Professional Development Federal Activities Program. The 3-year grants for nine projects are designed to bring together school, higher education and state-level practitioners, and policymakers to determine what needs to be done to ensure that beginning teachers in grantee states have the knowledge, skills, and support necessary to help all students achieve higher standards of learning.
The nine grantees were selected from among 66 applicants. The grantees are: Bernalillo Public Schools, Bernalillo, New Mexico; Colorado Partnership for Educational Renewal, Denver, Colorado; Connecticut State Department of Education, Hartford, Connecticut; Maryland State Department of Education, Baltimore, Maryland; Massachusetts Department of Education, Malden, Massachusetts; Oregon State System of Higher Education, Eugene, Oregon; University of California-Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California; University of California-Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz, California; and University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas.
