Fund for the Improvement of Education: Technology Education Program, Teacher Networking Projects. More than $1.8 million awarded to continue 15 FY 94 projects demonstrating applications of electronic networks for teacher professional development. Award recipients include public schools and districts, universities, and an Indian Nation. ORAD, 219-2143.
Fund for the Improvement of Education: Demonstration Projects, Elementary School Counseling Partnerships FY 95 grant funds totaling $2,106,116 to 10 projects that seek to build educational partnerships in specific areas. ORAD, 219-2274.
Fund for the Improvement of Education: Partnerships in Character Education Pilot Porject. FY 95 grants totaling $860,997 to four state departments of education to work with local school districts to develop curriculum materials or provide teacher training. Jacob K. Javits Gifted and Talented Students Education Program. One FY 95 grant for $288,654 to the College of William and Mary to operate the National Technical Assistantce Center for Curriculum, Development, Research, and Dissemination. ORAD, 219-1674.
Eisenhower Regional Mathematics and Science Education Consortia. Ten FY 95 awards totaling $1,470,007 to 10 regional consortia to support the improvement of mathematics and science education. ORAD, 219-2087.
Dwight D. Eisenhower Professional Development Federal Activities Program. Nine FY 95 grants totaling $3,462,391 to state agencies, institutions of higher education, and school districts. The purpose of the grants is to align state policies regarding teacher preparation, licensing, and induction at the state and local levels with challenging state content and student performance standards in the core academic subjects ORAD, 219-1087.
International Education Exchange Program. Two FY 95 grants totaling $3 million for civics and economics education ($1.5 million to the National Council on Economic Education to conduct workshops for teachers of school economics and training of trainers seminars for people from the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe; $1.5 million to the Center for Civic Education to enable civics educators from the U.S. and Eastern European countries to learn from and assist each other in improving education for democracy). Charter Schools Study. A contract for $536,000 was awarded from FY 95 funds to RPP International to examine, among other things, how charter schools differ from other public schools on goals, expectations, curricula, and teacher qualifications. GFI, 501-7564.
21st Century Community Learning Centers Grants. Six grants totaling nearly $700,000 to rural and inner-city public elementary and secondary schools to enable them to plan, implement, and expand community centers that meet the needs of the community by offering services in health, education, recreation, and cultural and social services. Library Education and Human Resource Development Program. Approximately $1 million to 16 institutions of higher education or library organizations to support institutes or training workshops for schools and public librarians. LP, 219-1315.
Library Literacy Program. More than $8 million in FY 95 funds to 224 local public libraries and 10 state libraries for projects designed to reduce the rate of adult illiteracy; to help libraries be more actively involved in adult literacy; to encourage cooperation among literacy providers in a community; and to promote volunteerism.
