OERI recently awarded a $12.5 million, 5-year grant to Harvard University to establish a National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy. The mission of the center is to improve the quality of educational programs that serve adults. Toward this end, researchers will study such topics as how to sustain and enhance motivation of adult learners; how to improve classroom practice; and the impact of participation in adult learning and literacy programs on an adult's life and how this impact can be assessed effectively. The center will have an extensive dissemination system of national publications, electronic news and discussion, and a practitioner network.
The address for the new National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy is Harvard University, Nichols House, Harvard Graduate School of Education, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02138. For further information about the center, contact Harold Himmelfarb in OERI at 202-219-2031.
The spring issue of the Bulletin carried a listing of the new National Educational Research and Development Centers. The names of two centers were incorrectly titled. The National Research Center on Improving Student Learning and Achievement in English is correctly titled National Research Center on Student Learning and Achievement in English (telephone, 518-442-5026); and the National Center for Research on Cultural Diversity and Second Language Learning is correctly titled the National Center for Research on Education, Diversity, and Excellence (telephone, 408-459-3500).
