Challenge Grants for Technology in Education Program. Twenty-four FY 96 grants totaling $23 million to school, community, and business partnerships in 16 states to help them use new technologies to transform their schools into information age learning centers. Fund for the Improvement of Education: Elementary School Mathematics and Science Equipment Program. Thirteen FY 96 grants totaling $3 million to school districts in Empowerment Zones and Enterprise Communities to help buy equipment to improve math and science instruction. ORAD, 219-2147.
Field-Initiated Studies Program. Forty-seven FY 96 grants totaling more than $8 million for research on topics that will advance educational theory and practice. (See 1996 Field-Initiated Studies Grants Awarded.)
Jacob K. Javits Gifted and Talented Students Education Program. Eight FY 96 grants totaling $1,765,000 to school districts, universities, departments of education and cooperatives to develop model demonstration programs that focus on gifted and talented children who are economically disadvantaged, have limited English proficiency, or are disabled. The Ready-to-Learn Television Program. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting was awarded a FY 96 continuation grant for $6.4 million to develop educational programming for preschool and early elementary school children and their families; to develop educational television, programming, and ancillary materials to increase school readiness for young children in limited-English-proficient households and to increase family literacy; and to develop accompanying support materials and services that promote the effective use of educational programming. 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program.
Six FY 96
continuation grants totaling nearly $745,000 to rural and
inner-city public elementary and secondary schools to enable them
to plan, implement, and expand community learning centers that meet
the needs of the community by offering services in health,
