OERI Bulletin - Fall 1998

ED Home Page Has a New Look . . .

If you haven't logged on to the U.S. Department of Education (ED) home page lately, you're in for a pleasant surprise. Visitors to http://www.ed.gov are finding a dramatically redesigned Web site that incorporates users' requests for improvements along with suggestions from our online customer survey. Not only has ED revised the way information is featured on its site, but a new layout and design helps visitors locate specific information. And the search capability is substantially enhanced, so visitors can easily explore other education-related sites and collections across the Internet.

The redesign comes at a time when the ED Web site is experiencing high levels of usage. A study by Quality Education Data, a market research company that examines trends in education, asked teachers to name the three sites they use most often in their profession. The Department's site was the most popular, followed by the OERI-supported ERIC Web site.

An important new feature of ED's redesigned home page is a Cross-Site Index, which allows searches across the complete contents of over 150 ED-sponsored Web sites--a collection of almost 100,000 items. In addition to ERIC, these include OERI's research centers and regional laboratories, as well as the Eisenhower National Clearinghouse, Regional Resource Centers for Special Education, and many more. Previously time-consuming searches across sites on topics such as authentic assessment or professional development now take only a few seconds. Check out the Cross-Site Index at http://search.ed.gov/csi.
