Jobs While They Learn
As postsecondary charges rise, more undergraduates work to meet the costs. A new NCES study
reports that three out of four undergraduates are employed while enrolled in school, and many
work full time. Undergraduates Who Work While Enrolled in Postsecondary Education: 1989-90
summarizes data from the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study that provides information
about the nation's undergraduates. The survey covered all types of postsecondary institutions.
Of all undergraduates, nearly 40 percent worked full time (35 or more hours a week) at some
time while enrolled in the 1989 90 school year. In addition, the students who worked while
enrolled in school were employed during most of their enrollment averaging 85 percent of the
time they were in school.
