RECENT GRANTS AND CONTRACTS

College Library Technology and Cooperation Grants Program. Thirty-seven awards totaling $3,762,786 were awarded to assist college and university libraries to acquire technological equipment and to conduct research in information technology. LP, 219-1315.

Drug-Free Recognition Program. An FY 94 contract for $887,280 to Henderson Associates, Inc. to provide logistical, administrative, and data analysis support services for the program. PIP, 219-2147.

Dwight D. Eisenhower National Program. FY 94 grants totaling approximately $3.4 million to 16 universities, school districts, and organizations to enhance math and science education under three priorities: Teacher development in the use of technology for mathematics and science education; encouraging female and minority students in mathematics and science; and science-based teacher professional development in environmental education. Evaluation of Urban Career Academies. FY 94 contract for approximately $1 million to MDRC to evaluate the impact and cost effectiveness of the career academy program. OR, 219-2102.

Fund for the Improvement and Reform of Schools and Teaching (FIRST): Schools and Teachers Program, School-Level Projects. A total of $2,013,692 in FY 94 grants to 25 schools or consortia of schools for projects that provide opportunities for teacher enrichment and other means to improve the professional status of teachers. Projects range from 1 to 3 years. OAS, 219-1496.

Fund for Innovation in Education (FIE): Standards-Based Professional Development. FY 94 grants totaling $7,236,757 for 27 partnership projects to develop and implement professional development activities for K-12 educators aligned with high academic content standards for students and high professional standards for teachers. Recipients include school districts, postsecondary institutions, and other education agencies from 20 states. OAS, 219-1496.

FIE: State Content Standards. FY 94 grants totaling $5,193,990 to 14 states and DC for 17 projects. They will cover English, history, foreign languages, and multidisciplinary projects of those subjects, geography, civics, and the arts, and will include new approaches to teacher education and certification related to content standards, recertification, and professional development. Improving Access to Research Library Resources. Thirty-eight FY 94 grants totaling $5,790,699 to major research libraries to improve sharing resources that are unique, rare, or exclusively held and of interest to a national research audience. LP, 219-1315.

Library Literacy Program. A total of $8,050,450 in FY 94 grants to 244 state and public libraries for adult literacy programs. LP, 219-1315.

Library Research and Demonstration Program. An FY 94 grant of $2.49 million to the Colorado Department of Education to demonstrate online and dial-in access to a multitype library bibliographic database on a statewide fiber optic network. LP, 219-1315.

Library Services for Indian Tribes Program: Special Projects Grants. FY 94 grants totaling $895,242 to 12 Indian tribes for public library development on reservations. One-quarter are for construction and the rest support personnel and initiation of special programs. LP, 219-1315.

National Diffusion Network Developer Demonstrator Projects. FY 94 grants totaling $1,962,561 to 26 new Developer Demonstrator Projects to make schools and school districts aware of effective education programs, products, and practices and to provide training, curriculum materials, and follow-up assistance. Public Library State Grant Awards. Three additional states received FY 94 state-administered grants totaling $15.1 million, bringing the FY 94 total to $121.6 million to 55 state library agencies to fund new public library service projects, public library construction and technology projects, and interlibrary cooperative projects.
