Since 1984, the Magnet Schools Assistance Program (MSAP) has supported the development of magnet schools in order for communities to increase educational opportunities that promote diversity, academic excellence, and equity, and build a community of practice.

Schools do not operate in total isolation from the communities in which they are located. Recognizing this, the Department of Education in conjunction with the Coalition for Community Schools held a national policy discussion in February to share the experiences of Community schools.

The Office of Innovation and Improvement is the home of the Department of Education's efforts to support military families and address their unique educational challenges.  These challenges include high rates of student mobility, the effects of multiple deployments, and a variety of military transformations.
