Today Secretary Duncan addressed a rally on the plaza of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Department of Education Building in support of music education. Also taking part in the rally were John Mahlmann, executive director of the National Association for Music Education, the event’s sponsor; National Basketball Association Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar; actress Florence Henderson; “Funky Winkerbean” cartoonist Tom Batuik; the Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps from Toledo, Ohio; and hundreds of students, educators, and parents from across the country. In his remarks to the crowd, Duncan stressed the importance of music to a student’s complete education and spoke of the power of music to inspire and engage young people.
