Sustaining Tutor Interest
Go Home

While student employers in general tend to suffer high attrition rates, a revolving door of America Counts tutors can be particularly detrimental to young students. Based on the experiences of hundreds of America Reads campuses, there are a number of suggestions for sustaining tutor interest and enthusiasm:
  • Hold an informational meeting for prospective tutors to create a shared understanding of program goals and tutor roles and responsibilities

  • Select tutors carefully--require applications and interview for both content-specific and social competencies

  • Provide high-quality tutor training

  • Provide ongoing support, including opportunities for in-service training, feedback, and problem solving

  • Place tutors at schools or tutoring sites where teachers and staff are supportive of their efforts

  • Make certain that tutors have a reliable means of commuting to and from tutoring sites

  • Recognize tutors for their commitment and accomplishments
