Supporting Materials: Sample Crisis Checklist
ASSESSMENT
- Identify the problem and determine the degree of impact.
- Take steps to secure the safety and security of the site, as needed.
- Make an incident report to the district administrator.
- Determine if additional support is needed. If so,
- Call school police and/or city police.
- Call cluster crisis team.
- Call other district crisis personnel.
- Alter daily/weekly schedule as needed.
INTERVENTION: COMMUNICATION
- Set up a command center.
- Establish sign-in procedures at all campus entry sites.
- Administrator/designee/crisis manager should do the following:
- Review facts and determine what information should be shared.
- Consider police investigation parameters.
- Notify family, with sensitivity and dispatch (consider a personal contact with family).
- Develop and disseminate bilingual fact sheet (written bulletin). Distribute to the following groups:
- Faculty
- Students
- Parents and community
- Begin media interactions:
- Identify a media spokesperson (office of communications may be used).
- Designate a location for media representatives.
- Contact neighboring schools.
- Contact schools of affected students' siblings.
- Initiate other communication activities:
- Classroom presentations or discussions
- Parent/community meetings
- School staff meeting
- Provide for rumor control:
- Keep a TV set or radio tuned to a news station
- Verify facts
- Update fact sheet as needed
- Work with student leaders:
- As sources knowledgeable of rumors among students
- As peer leaders to convey factual information
- As runners (written bulletins should be sealed when necessary)
INTERVENTION: FIRST AID AND EMERGENCY RELEASE PLAN
- Designate rooms/locations/areas for the following:
- Individual counseling
- Group counseling
- Parents
- Staff (certified)
- Sign-in for support services
- Initiate the referral process, including procedures for self-referral:
- Identify a crisis team member to staff all locations.
- Provide bilingual services as needed.
- Distribute appropriate forms for student counseling referrals to staff.
- Disseminate student referral information to teachers and other staff.
- Identify and contact high-risk students.
- Identify and contact other affected students, staff and personnel.
- Initiate appropriate interventions:
- Individual counseling
- Group counseling
- Parent/community meetings
- Staff meetings
- Classroom activities and/or presentations
- Referrals to community agencies.
- Designate rooms/locations/areas for the following:
INTERVENTION: DISSEMINATE APPROPRIATE HANDOUTS TO STAFF/PARENTS
INTERVENTION: DEBRIEFING
- Daily and mandatory crisis intervention activities. Include the following:
- Review the actions of the day.
- Identify weaknesses and strengths of crisis interventions.
- Review status of referred students.
- Prioritize needs and personnel needed for the next day.
- Plan follow-up actions.
- Allow time for emotional debriefing.
