The Role of National Associations

National associations are usually, but not exclusively, non-profit membership organizations that represent their constituents' interests before government; supply assistance and services to their members; and may set policy and regulate standards within their areas of interest and jurisdiction. While associations are non-governmental organizations (NGOs), they nevertheless exercise considerable influence in national policymaking, are regularly consulted by government in their areas of expertise and concern, and in some cases (as with accreditation) may exercise delegated power and authority.
