Digital School District

Quaker Valley School District

Sewickley, PA

Summary

In 2001, the Quaker Valley School District won a competitive state grant ($4.1 million) to develop a model for a "Digital School District." The initiative established a districtwide wireless network and provided students in grade 3–12 with individual laptop computers (Apple iBooks). The objectives were to (a) provide all students and teachers with equal access to the technology and the resources of the Internet, (b) infuse the technology into the curriculum, and (c) determine the impact on student performance and achievement. Now in its 4th year, the project has been modified to provide laptops to students in grades 9–12 only, while increasing the number of units in the laboratories and on portable carts that can be moved into classrooms as needed. So far, the impact appears to be very positive in terms of both individual student performance, overall performance in grades K–12, and productivity of the teaching staff.
