Universal design in education and technology
planning
The concept of Universal Design
evolved from the field of architecture -
recognizing the benefits of designing products and
environments that could benefit all users....not
just those with special needs. Universal Design
for Learning(UDL) has been evolving as an
important approach to teaching and assessment.
Thanks to the research efforts of the Center for
Applied Special Technology, practices that employ
UDL approaches capitalize on the many
opportunities that digital media and technology
offer to all. I would hope that a national
technology plan and agenda would embrace these
principles and the entire umbrella concept of
universal design in education as important tenets
for the future. If we maximize technology access,
across the board, for all....we maximize education
for
all.
