  Assistive Technology

High school students with learning and emotional disabilities benefit when they are trained to use the same assistive technology to which they will have access on the post-secondary level. Too often, however, high school students either have no awareness such technology exists, or no access even if they are aware of it. Disability Services Staff at the college level tell us many students come to them either too embarrassed to ask for assistive tech, or too frustrated by their lack of familiarity with the technology to persist in using it when it is offered to them. THIS MUST CHANGE ! We must work to level the playing field for those students cognitively able to meet the challenges of college, but frustrated in their efforts due to their disabilities. Software like ViaVoice and Kurzweil, for example, should be widely available in high schools!
