National Endowment for the Humanities
Division of Education Programs

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) supports teachers -- including those in private schools -- who wish to strengthen and expand their understanding of history, literature, foreign languages and culture, and other areas of the humanities. With NEH support, teachers may join a formal study session during the summer, use the summer to pursue independent study, plan a sabbatical for a year of independent study, or develop a project to support group study.

For information about eligibility requirements and selection criteria, and for application materials offered by the Division of Education Programs at the National Endowment for the Humanities, please visit the NEH website at http://www.neh.gov, or contact the program at (202) 606-8380, via email: education@neh.gov. NEH program staff welcome the opportunity to discuss grant opportunities and project ideas with interested private school faculty members and staff.

NEH Summer 2001 Seminars and Institutes for School Teachers

Each summer the National Endowment for the Humanities supports a variety of Study opportunities in the humanities for school teachers, including teachers in private schools. Seminars and institutes are national (open to those who teach American K-12 students), residential, and rigorous. Designed to strengthen the quality of the humanities instruction available to American students, they are led by some of the nation's outstanding scholars and take place at major colleges and universities and archival facilities across the country and abroad.

Topics considered among the 30 seminars and institutes for school teachers offered during the summer of the year 2001 include Jamestown, the American West, the Civil Rights movement, China and the world, Shakespeare, and the tales of the Brothers Grimm. For a complete list of both seminars and institutes, go to the NEH Web site, or phone (202/606-8463), or e-mail (sem-inst@neh.gov).

The listings contain seminar and institute titles and the means to contact each director. Prospective applicants can request information from as many seminar and institute directors as they wish but may apply to only one NEH summer offering.

In response to a request for information, seminar and institute directors will send a letter describing the content, logistics, expectations, and conditions of that project. Each letter will be accompanied by application instructions as well as information about the program's costs. Participants receive from the National Endowment for the Humanities a stipend based on the length of the seminar or institute. Year 2001 stipends are $2,800 for four weeks, $3,250 for five weeks, and $3,700 for six weeks and are intended to help cover travel costs and living expenses, as well as books and miscellaneous expenses.

Requests for information and completed applications should NOT be directed to the National Endowment for the Humanities; they should be addressed to the individual projects as found in the listings (http://www.neh.gov/projects/si-school.html). The application deadline is March 1.
