Sean C. Dent serves as the Deputy Assistant General Counsel for Ethics and Alternate Designated Ethics Official. In this capacity, he provides counsel to senior Department officials, managers and employees on matters governed by the Criminal Conflict of Interest Statutes, Standards of Ethical Conduct, and the Hatch Act.

Prior to joining the U.S. Department of Education, Mr. Dent was the law clerk to the Honorable Inez Smith Reid, Associate Judge of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals. Mr. Dent also served two terms as a member of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals Committee on Admissions from October 2003 –2009. In this capacity, he participated in character and fitness examinations and served as a Bar Examiner for the essay portion of the District of Columbia bar exam.

Mr. Dent is a graduate of Allegheny College (B.A. 1991) and the Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law (J.D. 1999).
