Welcome

Thank you for visiting the Office of Safe and Healthy Students (OSHS) website. We are committed to serving States and school communities by providing resources, direct support, and technical assistance on topics that affect the well-being, health and safety of our nation’s young people.

Goal

OSHS directly supports efforts at the State and local level to improve education outcomes for students with the ultimate goal of providing all students—regardless of zip code, race, ethnicity, religion, family income, sex (including gender identity), sexual orientation, disability, language status, gender, or migrant status—with a high-quality education.

Background

In December 2015, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) became law, which reauthorized the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA). ESSA reflects our nation’s longstanding commitment to equity of opportunity for all students. The new law has a clear goal of ensuring our education system prepares every child to graduate from high school ready to thrive in college and careers.

Student Support and Academic Enrichment Program

The Office of Safe and Healthy Students is responsible for providing States and localities with  monitoring support and technical assistance on the Student Support and Academic Enrichment (SSAE) program which was newly authorized under subpart 1 of Title IV, Part A.
The program helps to meet our goals by supporting State educational agencies (SEAs), local educational agencies (LEAs), schools, and communities in their efforts to:

    (1) Provide all students with access to a well-rounded education,
    (2) Improve school conditions for student learning, and
    (3) Improve the use of technology in order to improve academic achievement and digital literacy.

Integral to our efforts to ensure that every child graduates from high school ready to thrive in college and careers, we also have programs that focus on homeless youth and neglected and delinquent youth.
