International Education Week is a celebration co-organized by the Department of Education and the Department of State, highlighting the important benefits of international education and international exchanges in the U.S. and around the World. Each year, the International Education Week events promote classroom activities and materials focused on international subjects and our international counterparts.

In 2006, the theme for International Education Week was International Education: Engaging in Global Partnerships and Opportunities. Secretary Margaret Spellings highlighted IEW 2006 with official visits to China, Korea, and Japan accompanied by Assistant Secretary of State Dina Powell and U.S. university presidents. The U.S. Department of Education partnered with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to host a live interactive downlink with students in the Washington, DC metropolitan area and the crew of the International Space Station (ISS). An international videoconference featuring U.S. students learning Arabic speaking with students in Tunisia and Lebanon was held in Annandale, Virginia. Individual Department offices sponsoring special events included the International Affairs Office, Office of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE and Higher Education Programs), Office of Educational Technology, and the National Institute for Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR).
