Program Description The National Museum of African American History and Culture Act of 2003 authorizes the Institute of Museum and Library Services, in consultation with the Council and Director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, to create a new grant program to strengthen African American museum services. IMLS will make its first grants in this program in 2006.

Eligible Activities Museum Grants for African American History and Culture provide opportunities for staff of African American museums to gain knowledge and abilities in the areas of management, operations, programming, collections care and other skills identified as a high priority by applicants. Projects may be designed to include staff exchange, education or training, or other strategies that increase the skills needed to improve African American museum services.
