Hewlett-Packard and Oregon Dept. Education have equipped three rural Oregon classrooms with personal digital assistants. These pre-prototypes are not elegant but they are palm-size, wireless, and up to about 20 kids in a class- room simultaneously access the Internet. The students e-mail their peers who are working on student-led research, correspond with scientists (through a certified teacher facilitator) and browse the web without graphics.

Each of the classrooms has at least one desktop machine with graphical web browser so that students can follow up on relevant sites of interest in their research.
