Statement by U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley Regarding Ernest L. Boyer

The loss of Ernie Boyer is a loss for all Americans. I had the utmost respect for him and his work. Dr. Boyer literally dedicated his life to improving the education of America's children and young adults. Among the many leadership positions that he held, he served so ably as U.S. Commissioner of Education from 1977 to 1979.

He always searched for new ways to improve schools, teaching and learning. I remember, as if it were yesterday, his insightful observations about education, parents and grandparents during a recent car ride that we shared between meeting places. His prolific body of writings will endure as a legacy of his passion for and commitment to teaching and learning.
