In May 1999, the Department invited the presidents/chancellors of more than 6,600 postsecondary educational institutions to participate in a web-based Y2K survey. Roughly 2,100 responses were received by the July 2 closing date. During first week of October, the Department completed a follow-up, random sample phone survey of 1,600 postsecondary institutions. Final results, reported from 1,352 respondents, show the following: Mission-Critical Systems
- In the October survey, 61 percent reported all mission-critical systems were Y2K compliant. This compares with 30 percent reporting full compliance at the time of the July survey.
- In the October survey, 63 percent reported all mission-critical systems were or would be compliant by October 1. This compares with 60 percent predicting full compliance by October 1 in the July survey.
- In the October survey, 97 percent of respondents reported all mission-critical systems were or would be compliant by January 1. This compares with 99 percent in the July survey expecting to be fully compliant by January 1.
Contingency Plans
- In the October survey, 73 percent of respondents reported contingency plans were completed. This compares with 63 percent at the time of the July survey.
- In the October survey, 73 percent reported contingency plans were or would be completed by October 1. This compares with 83 percent in the July survey expecting to complete them by October 1.
- In the October survey, 88 percent reported that contingency plans were or would be completed by January 1. This compares with 99 percent in the July survey expecting to complete them by January 1.
Status of Central Administrative Systems (e.g., accounting, finance, payroll, etc.)
- In the October survey, 67 percent of respondents reported all Central Administrative Systems were Y2K compliant. This compares with 54 percent reporting full compliance at the time of the July survey.
- In the October survey, 95 percent reported all Central Administrative Systems were or would be compliant by January 1. This compares with 99 percent in the July survey expecting full compliance by January 1.
Status of Student Services (e.g., student records, financial aid, food services, etc.)
- In the October survey, 70 percent of respondents reported all Student Services were Y2K compliant. This compares with 48 percent reporting full compliance at the time of the July survey.
- In the October survey, 96 percent of respondents reported all Student Services were or would be compliant by January 1. This compares with 99 percent in the July survey expecting full compliance by January 1.
Status of Infrastructure (e.g., heating, security, telecommunications, building, etc.)
- In the October survey, 62 percent of respondents reported all Infrastructure components were Y2K compliant. This compares with 35 percent reporting full compliance at the time of the July survey.
- In the October survey, 85 percent of respondents reported all Infrastructure components were or would be compliant by January 1. This compares with 98 percent in the July survey expecting full compliance by January 1.
