Statement by U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley Regarding the Resignation of Eugene E. Garcia, Director of Bilingual Education and Minority Languages Affairs

Gene E. Garcia shared with us his expertise in language learning and cultural diversity through a critical time, as we worked with the Congress to reauthorize the bilingual education legislation.

And as director of bilingual education and minority languages affairs, he has been tireless in striving to assure all children have equal access to a quality education. Millions of culturally and linguistically diverse children are benefiting from his efforts.

At a time when federal support for children whose first language is not English is threatened, we must redouble our efforts. Gene will be sorely missed.

NOTE TO EDITORS: Garcia has accepted the position of dean of the Graduate School of Education, University of California at Berkeley.
