Kunin to Leave Education Department; Confirmed as Ambassador to Switzerland

Deputy Secretary of Education Madeleine M. Kunin was confirmed by the Senate last night as U.S. ambassador to Switzerland.

She announced today that she will leave the Education Department in early August.

"Madeleine is not only a partner in education reform, she is a dear friend," said Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley. "Her vision of a better America and her deep concern for the education of America's children have been an inspiration to those of us privileged to work at her side."

"My work here at the department has been extraordinarily satisfying," Kunin said. "In three and a half years we have seen the agency become a strong, high quality, enthusiastic organization. The work we do for the children and families of this country is absolutely fundamental for all Americans.

"I'm very proud of all we have accomplished and will fondly remember my time with a president and secretary who are so deeply committed to children and families."

Kunin is a former three term governor of Vermont. She was appointed by President Clinton in 1993.

Born in Zurich, Switzerland, Kunin immigrated to the United States in 1940.
