RILEY NAMES COMMITTEE ON FOREIGN MEDICAL EDUCATION AND ACCREDITATION
U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley today announced the membership of the newly-formed National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation.
The 11-member committee, established by the Higher Education Amendments of 1992, will evaluate accreditation standards that apply to foreign medical schools seeking to become eligible to participate in the Federal Family Education Loan Program. The committee will also determine whether these standards are comparable with those that apply to medical schools in the U.S.
"The committee will play a vital role in assuring that federal loans supported by taxpayer dollars only go to foreign medical schools that provide a high quality education to its students," Riley said. "The members' broad range of experience and medical expertise will be a great asset as they assume the important task of evaluating the schools' standards of accreditation."
The secretary has designated L. Thompson Bowles, president of National Board of Medical Examiners, Philadelphia, as chairperson through September 30, 1995. Bowles will serve as a member through 1997.
Other members appointed for terms ending September 30, 1997 are:
