STATEMENT BY SECRETARY OF EDUCATION RICHARD W. RILEY REGARDING THE SENATE COMMITTEE ON LABOR AND HUMAN RESOURCES PASSAGE OF THE IMPROVING AMERICA'S SCHOOLS ACT

I am pleased by today's overwhelming 16-1 bipartisan passage by the Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources of the Improving America's Schools Act. Today's action represents another significant step in moving this important legislation toward enactment.

Our proposal to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act is absolutely integral to the Administration's education agenda. The Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources has demonstrated its commitment to the Administration's priorities on upholding high academic standards for all children; a commitment to teaching and learning; flexibility to stimulate local initiatives for school reform and accountability; fostering connections among schools, parents and communities; and better targeting our limited resources to where they are most needed.

I appreciate the speed and thoughtful deliberation with which the full committee members and their staffs approached this bill. I look forward to working with the full Senate when it takes up the bill in the coming weeks, and I anticipate final action on the bill before the end of the summer.
