Statement by U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley Regarding Suggestion to Offset Costs of Gasoline Tax Repeal with Cuts in Education [House Majority Leader Dick Armey, Meet the Press, NBC News, 5/5/96]

There They Go Again?

House Majority Leader Dick Armey's, R-Texas, call for cuts in education is a painful reminder of the budget priorities pursued by the majority leadership in Congress since last year -- and rejected by the American people. With the ink barely dry on the fiscal 1996 budget agreement, which restored education funding, Rep. Armey apparently can't wait to erase that achievement and decrease investment in education. I hope members of both parties, who have worked to support education, will reject this call to cut investment in our future. The last thing we ought to be doing is restricting opportunities for students and their families.
