ITEM: MATH-SCIENCE GUIDEBOOK TO FEDERAL RESOURCES AVAILABLE --

Trying to describe a "top quark" to your students or help your second-grade class understand fractions? A new comprehensive resource directory might help.

Organized by federal agency and by state, Guidebook to Excellence: A Directory of Federal Resources for Math and Science Education lists programs and facilities at the national, regional and state levels, complete with contact information. The book is intended to inform educators and the public about federally-supported resources in these subjects and to increase access to them.

The guidebook was prepared for the National Science and Technology Council's Committee on Education and Training, chaired by Deputy Education Secretary Madeleine Kunin. "There's so much available," Kunin said, "if you know where to look. We believe this is an important tool to help enrich and improve students' learning and performance."

Regional versions of the guidebook are being distributed to every school district, college and university by the Eisenhower National Clearinghouse (ENC) for Mathematics and Science Education. ENC developed the guidebooks with funding from the U.S. Education Department's Office of Educational Research and Improvement.

The information is also available in electronic format.
