Riley Pleased; California Schools will Receive Goals 2000 Funds

U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley said today that he was pleased that schools in California can now receive $42 million in Goals 2000 funds that were awarded last October.

On October 5, 1995, California was awarded $42,111,705 in second-year Goals 2000 funds. On April 19, 1996, Gov. Pete Wilson wrote to Riley seeking assurances about participation in Goals 2000.

Riley responded on April 29, with a letter stating, "none of the requests you have made are in any way inconsistent with the provisions of the law and no special treatment of California is required to accommodate them."

Riley noted that the recently enacted fiscal 1996 budget provides $350 million for Goals 2000, of which California will be allocated approximately $39 million. "While accepting the $42.1 million already awarded to California in no way obligates the state to seek or accept funding in future years, " Riley wrote, "I hope that California will now continue its participation without further hesitation."
