Statement by U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley Regarding National Science Foundation Report: Indicators of Science and Mathematics Education, 1995

This latest report reinforces trend data from the Education Department's National Assessment of Educational Progress -- students are learning more math and science. The findings underscore the simple fact that when we expect more of students they achieve more.

Still, the challenge remains to assure that every student has the benefit of high academic standards, backed by well prepared teachers and access to new technologies.

The budget agreement with the Congress is a step in the right direction, but we still have a great deal of work ahead if we are to provide a world-class education for every American.
