Statement by U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley

regarding Rescissions in House and Senate

We are disappointed that at this late date the Congress still is cutting funds slated for the education of America's children. Congress had already approved these funds, and students and schools were counting on them.

At the same time, we are pleased that the Senate last night restored some of the deep cuts made by the House. The Senate's action is closer to what is needed to move education forward in this country.

But we continue to be very concerned about the House's determination to severely cut education funding. This is bad for students and sends a signal to America's parents that Congress is starting to tune them out.

Cutting education funds will add to our deficit in the long term because without a good education, our children will not be able to become productive members of society. I urge the Congress to reconsider its actions. Education is an investment in America's future.
