Education Secretary Riley Appoints Four Members to Student Aid Advisory Committee
U.S. Education Secretary Richard W. Riley today announced the appointment of four new members to the Advisory Committee on Student Financial Assistance. The 11-member committee advises the secretary and the Congress on student aid matters and makes recommendations on ways to improve access to postsecondary education for low- and middle-income students.
"Committee members offer a variety of perspectives to ensure that student aid programs are efficiently and effectively meeting student needs," Riley said. "Their input will be especially useful as the direct loan program gets underway."
Appointed to a term ending September 30, 1994, is:
- Robert A. Kraig, a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
Appointed to terms ending September 30, 1995, are:
- Vernetta P. Fairley, director of financial aid, University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg;
- Elizabeth M. Hicks, coordinator of financial aid for Harvard University and assistant dean of admissions and financial aid for Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges, Cambridge, Mass.
Appointed to a term ending September 30, 1996, is:
- Fernando de Necochea, director of financial aid, Brown University, Providence, R.I.
Robert E. Alexander, chancellor, University of South Carolina-Aiken, will continue serving on the committee until his term expires, September 30, 1994.
Five members of the advisory committee are appointed by the secretary and six are appointed by Congress. The committee was created by the Higher Education Amendments of 1986.
