Riley Names Members to National Library of Education Advisory Task Force

U.S. Education Secretary Richard W. Riley today announced the appointment of 12 members to the National Library of Education Advisory Task Force.

"These new appointees bring a useful combination of skill and expertise to the department," Riley said. "Their advice and guidance will help sustain the National Library of Education as a primary source for educational research and related information." Appointees are:

John Williams Collins, III,
librarian, Graduate School of Education, Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass.;

Donald P. Ely,
professor of educational instructional design, development and evaluation, Syracuse University, N.Y.;

Joseph J. Fitzsimmons,
retired chairman, University Microfilms International, corporate vice president of Bell and Howell Co., Ann Arbor, Mich.;

Miles M. Jackson,
dean and professor, School of Library and Information Studies, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, Hawaii;

Jane B. Kolbe,
new chairwoman of the Library of Education Advisory Task Force, South Dakota state librarian and director of the executive board of Chief Officers of State Library Agencies, Pierre, S.D.;

Deborah Miller,
Miller Consulting Group, Hoffman Estates, Ill.;

Janet Minami,
director, media services, Los Angeles Unified School District, Calif.;

Oliver Ocasek,
vice president and District 7 representative, Ohio State Board of Education, Northfield, Ohio;

Jessie Carney Smith,
university librarian and Cosby professor of the humanities, Fisk University, Nashville, Tenn.;

Robert M. Warner,
professor and university historian, School of Information and Library Studies, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (Warner is also a former archivist of the United States);

Karen A. Whitney,
information access faculty, Estrella Mountain Community College Center, Litchfield Park, Ariz.; and

Harriet Ann Williams,
parent coordinator, Tacoma Urban League, Inc., Washington.

Authorizing legislation requires the task force to be comprised of four persons from each of the following categories: library and information services professionals; scholars and researchers; and educators and citizens knowledgeable about the role of comprehensive library and information service resources.
