New Publications for Families, Communities and Educators

The Department of Education recently released three new publications that demonstrate the need for family-school partnerships and offer suggestions for educators, parents and community groups on how to work together to improve education.

Family Involvement in Education: A National Portrait [1.8 MB in pdf format] highlights findings from a survey of parents and invites readers to assess their own school to make it more family friendly. Parents, teachers and principals can compare their experiences to those of the respondents nationwide to judge what they need to do.

A companion report, Questions Parents Ask About Schools, answers some of the most frequent concerns that parents have on school work, homework, safety and preparing children for a career. A Spanish version of this publication, Las Preguntas Que Hacen Los Padres Sobre La Escuela, is also available.

The third is a brochure designed for families, schools & communities around the country that are gearing up for another year of back-to-school activities. Information for Families and Community Members offers tips to: help our children read well and independently by the end of third grade; help our children learn to meet high math and science standards and to take challenging math and science courses; and help our children start early to prepare for college and careers. Información para Familias y Miembros de la Comunidad, the Spanish version of this brochure, is also online.

The National Portrait was sponsored by the U.S Department of Education, the Partnership for Family Involvement in Education, and the GTE Foundation. Questions Parents Ask About Schools was prepared by the staff from Parent Information and Resource Centers across the U.S., which are funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Information for Families and Community Members was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education and the Partnership for Family Involvement in Education.
