In cooperation with the North Carolina Education and Law Project, the Exceptional Children's Assistance Center has developed the Parents in Partnership Project (PIPP). The purpose of PIPP is to increase the involvement of North Carolina's families in all levels of their children's education. This project intends to serve families throughout the State, with an emphasis on reaching underserved families.
Both of these agencies have experience in providing services to parents and families. Since 1983, the Exceptional Children's Assistance Center has received federal funding to provide training and information to parents of infants, toddlers, and youth with disabilities in North Carolina. The North Carolina Education and Law Project provides advocacy on behalf of low- income students and parents and has trained over 200 families serving on local site based management committees.
PIPP is designed to achieve eight key goals to assist parents throughout the State:
GOAL 1: Provide information in a variety of formats designed to strengthen and support the ability of North Carolina families to become partners with professionals to meet the education needs of their children.
GOAL 2: Increase parents' knowledge of and confidence in child rearing activities by providing workshops and conferences designed to respond to specific parent identified training and information needs.
GOAL 3: Assist parents to participate fully in educational decision making processes by providing workshops and conferences designed to respond to specific training and information needs identified by parents.
GOAL 4: Assist parents to participate fully in all levels of educational decision making processes by providing leadership knowledge and skills.
GOAL 5: Expand the North Carolina Parent Education Studies Program to establish a core group of parents in each North Carolina county who are knowledgeable about education policy and practice issues and who possess the skills necessary to lead efforts among parents to improve schools.
GOAL 6: Assist traditionally hard to reach families to participate fully in decision making processes by providing a flexible information and training program to meet their individual needs.
GOAL 7: Provide teachers and other professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to become effective partners with parents by providing training and information.
GOAL 8: Expand Parents as Teachers in North Carolina by providing services for 45-50 families through three local programs.
