Founded in 1964 by the Reverend Leon Howard Sullivan, OIC is dedicated to providing basic skills training, job skills training, and placement opportunities for disadvantaged youth, men, and women. Recognizing that employment and social opportunities are directly related to the ability to read and comprehend, OIC promotes literacy and reading, employing various remediation activities to strengthen the academic and functional needs of the unemployed and the underemployed. OIC's operate over 70 community-based affiliates in the continental United States. Its sister organization, OIC International, provides services in 28 countries in Africa, Central America, and Asia.
