Books and Beyond is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing educational programs and services that increase literacy and enable parents to fulfill their vital role in their child's education. The Books and Beyond reading incentive program was created specifically to improve attitudes toward reading and to foster a love of books. Developed in 1979, under the auspices of the Solana Beach School District in California, Books and Beyond is a part of the U.S. Department of Education's National Diffusion Network (NDN) and is recognized as an outstanding education model that helps break the growing pattern of illiteracy. Books and Beyond has been successfully implemented in over 5,000 school sites and currently reaches some 2.5 million children and their families. A preschool component, Ready to Read, developed through funding from the U.S. Department of Education, is designed to assist preschool parents in helping their children develop both a love of reading and an early enthusiasm for books. In addition, the organization provides the education advisers for the NFL's Math, Science, Beyond Program, and other services.

The Boy Scouts of America has provided an education program for boys and young adults since the organization's inception in 1910. The program is designed to build character, to train boys in citizenship responsibilities, and to develop personal fitness. There are currently more than 4.1 million youth and almost 1.2 million adult leaders in the organization serving youth from first grade through age 20. The Boy Scouts of America demonstrates its concern for literacy through its emphasis on reading as an important basis for accomplishing individual advancement goals and through its publications for its members. Included in these publications is one of America's premier magazines, Boys' Life, which has been entertaining, informing, and educating young men with special features and regular columns since 1911.
