READ*WRITE*NOW! Just Add Kids - August 1996

Introduction

READ*WRITE*NOW! is a year-round, intergenerational program sponsored by the Partnership for Family Involvement in Education at the U.S. Department of Education to improve the reading and writing skills of America's students from preschool to grade 6.

The program pairs each child with a learning partner (a family member, a teacher, a librarian, a neighbor, or a volunteer from a community organization). The partner agrees to read and write with the child for 30 minutes, once a week. The child pledges to read 30 minutes a day, five days a week, and to learn one new word a day for five days a week.

Just Add Kids is a resource directory of learning partners, reading sites, and other literacy services for families and communities who want to help children improve their reading and writing skills through READ*WRITE*NOW! and other literacy efforts.

This directory provides the names of national organizations that have volunteer learning partners at the local level, suggests potential sites for tutoring, and provides information on national literacy organizations that can help further literacy efforts across the United States.
